Heritage Welsh Dolls
by
Seren Mair.
These beautiful dolls are individually Handmade using locally produced cloths sourced from local mills still using traditional materials, methods and machinery. By using such Welsh flannels and wools I am able to recreate the feel and character of the original costumes, and also reproduce the costume appropriate for different regions. The style of dress is similar to that of peasant workers of the period throughout Europe and America. Welsh costume distinguishes itself by being made from homespun flannels using locally available dyes. All over Wales dyes were produced from local pigments ranging from onion skins to cockle shells, resulting in the variety of colours from region to region. Hardwearing calicos and cottons were used for under garments and bonnets, whilst wool and flannels were used for outerwear. The average peasants wardrobe would have consisted of Under garments: drawers and chemise Outer garments: pais (petticoat) and apron betgwn (bedgown) and shawl stockings and shoes bonnet and hats cloak and sleeves (detachable). Calico and flannel being natural fibres give many years of wear and could be handed down from generation to generation.
